Important Factors about 3 Phase Generator Wiring

For power generators the phases in the wiring is usually determined by color.  The colors of 3 phase generator wiring varies from country to country.  Each color coded wire represents a different phase and frequency of voltage.  You are able to find the definitions and measurement of each wire on electric diagrams, operation and instruction manuals.

3 phase generator wiring must have a balanced load and correct phase rotation for the generator motors.  It is important that the marked color coded (conductors) wires are connected appropriately to achieve the proper rotation and balance.  Some countries do not have standard color codes on the conductors.  However, world-wide there is typically a white or white striped wire that represents the neutral and a green or green striped wire representing the grounded conductor.

The 3 phase generator wiring diagram here shows the three colors of the wave form which would match the American standard of wiring; Black =VL1, Red = VL2 and Blue = VL3.  The lines on the diagram represent the distinction of instantaneous voltage (or current) with respect to time.

Higher powered, higher voltage 3 phase generator wiring may not always have a neutral wire because you are able to connect the phases directly to one another.  You are still able to support power to devices requiring lower amount of load.

Differences Between Single Phase & 3 Phase Generator Wiring

Most generators regardless if they are diesel generators or natural gas are designed to be either single or three phase operation.  Single phase generators provide 120V or 120/240V and are mostly common on smaller, portable generators that need to supply a lower amount of electrical power such as small appliances, recreation vehicles and light machinery.  Commercial and industrial power requirements need 3 phase generators producing 120/208V, 277/480 and 347/600 because there is a greater need for steady, constant and more reliable power for large applications, equipment, motors, trucks and emergency vehicles.
